Biography

Dr. Nicola Waters grew up in the UK and began her nursing career at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex. She moved to Canada in the 1990s where she gained experience in acute, community and long-term care nursing before specializing in wound care and applying her knowledge in the Advanced Wound Care industry sector.
Nicola has been a nurse educator for over 15 years in undergraduate and graduate programs with a focus on teaching research, health literacy and community health. She is an honorary senior lecturer at Cardiff University where she has taught in the MSc. program for 12 years. She has supervised Masters and Doctoral students nationally and internationally.

Nicola’s experience in clinical practice, within the health care technology industry and in academia enabled her to establish a program of research at the interface of technology, social science and frontline clinical practice. She currently works as a health research consultant providing scientific advisory consulting, educational and research services to the health technology sector. Nicola has developed a particular interest in the ethics of Big Data and artificial intelligence and its implications for the future of healthcare. As concepts such as artificial and augmented intelligence, virtual reality, machine learning and personalized medicine become the “buzzwords” of tomorrow Nicola’s passion for technology also extends into the classroom. In her early career Nicola completed certificate programs in web design and graphics, database management and computer networking. She is an early adopter of new educational innovations and has developed skills in the use of computer software, digital design and social media platforms to enhance student engagement and learning. Nicola is an active member of member of CASN’s Digital Health Interest group.
